The rustic general store and saloon at Kennedy Meadows Resort & Pack Station on Highway 108

Deep in the Stanislaus National Forest, about 60 miles east of Sonora on Highway 108, you'll find the Kennedy Meadows Resort & Pack Station. This isn't just a campground; it's an institution. Founded over 100 years ago, it serves as a general store, restaurant, saloon, and the primary outfitter for pack trips into the breathtaking Emigrant Wilderness. The entire place has a fantastic, authentic "Old West" feel, with rustic wood-shingled buildings that look like they're straight out of a movie. Given this charmingly rustic aesthetic, I was prepared for a... shall we say, "historic" restroom experience.

I was completely and wonderfully wrong.

Old West Exterior, Modern Interior

The public restrooms are located in a small, dedicated building that perfectly matches the dark-wood, rustic style of the main lodge and store. The doors are simple, painted white, and clearly marked for Men and Women.

Stepping inside, however, is a completely different experience. You are immediately greeted by a bright, modern, and exceptionally clean facility.

Key Features of the Restroom

This is a textbook example of how to build a public restroom for high use, durability, and cleanliness. The owners clearly invested in the right materials, and it shows.

  • Smart Design: The walls are covered in bright white FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Panels). This is a fantastic choice, as FRP is non-porous, incredibly easy to clean, and highly resistant to impact and graffiti.
  • Durable Fixtures: The facility features a standard commercial flushing toilet, a sturdy wall-mounted ceramic sink, a simple mirror, and a liquid soap dispenser. Everything is functional and built to last.
  • Cleanliness & Stock: The room was spotless. The floor was clean, the trash was empty, and the staff had generously stocked the room with multiple extra rolls of toilet paper and paper towels.
  • Accessibility: The restroom is fully accessible, with properly installed stainless steel grab bars around the toilet.
  • Vandalism-Free: There was not a single mark of graffiti or any sign of vandalism. The bright, clean environment naturally discourages this kind of behavior.

The Final Verdict: A Perfect Score

This is, quite simply, a perfect public restroom. It masterfully balances the rustic, historic charm of its location on the outside with a modern, clean, and durable interior. It’s clear that the owners of Kennedy Meadows Resort care about their facilities and their guests' experience.

This bathroom is vandal-free, graffiti-free, and immaculately clean. It's the gold standard for a high-traffic, remote commercial location. I can't find a single fault.
