Graffiti / Scratch Removal From Sacrificial Layer
Our product comprises two key components: a durable stainless steel frame and a sacrificial layer of polycarbonate positioned in front of the mirror. The stainless steel frame offers robustness and is resistant to minor scratches, which can typically be buffed out using a polishing wheel and a mild abrasive. The polycarbonate layer, designed to protect the mirror, can be easily repaired from scratches with a heat gun, a process that is straightforward and demonstrated in the linked YouTube video. In cases where the polycarbonate layer sustains deep scratches that are beyond repair, it can be conveniently removed and replaced, ensuring the longevity and aesthetic appeal of the product.
Installation Recommendations
Secure mirror to wall using 3/8” stainless steel anchoring hardware (not provided). For optimal strength, install with 3/4” or greater back bracing. Use T-nuts or equivalent if mounting to partitions. Through-bolting is recommended for maximum vandal resistance.
Warranty
The AA-MTL-PL mirror is backed by a vandal resistance warranty when properly installed. Please see the product page for complete warranty details.
Competitor Comparison
Unlike traditional glass mirrors or basic metal alternatives, the AA-MTL-PL model offers a polished stainless steel reflective surface protected by a sacrificial polycarbonate layer. Competing models like the Bobrick B-165 series lack this dual protection, making this mirror ideal for correctional, school, and industrial restroom installations where safety and durability are critical.
Installation Note
Upon delivery, many customers mistake the backside of the mirror for the reflective surface. To identify the correct side, look for the grey protective plastic film with blue lettering—this covers the true reflective mirror surface. The rear of the mirror, while somewhat reflective, will not have any protective wrap. Carefully peel away the grey plastic film to reveal the polished stainless steel mirror surface. Due to laser-cutting precision, the protective film may be difficult to remove, but rest assured the side with blue-lettered grey film is designed to be removed before installation.
Inspection Prior to Installation
Maintaining the flatness of polished stainless steel mirrors is critical—especially for larger sizes. Upon receipt, immediately photograph the unopened package from multiple angles to document its condition in case of shipping damage. Before installation, lay the mirror flat and carefully remove the protective film for inspection. Check the reflective surface for dents, scratches, or warping caused by transit. Minor surface imperfections may be considered normal depending on mirror size (see Mirror Surface Notes below). For best documentation, video the unboxing, but photos are required. Any defects must be reported before installation; once installed, mirrors are considered accepted by the contractor or end user.
Mirror Surface and Reflection Quality
Our stainless steel mirrors are designed as safer alternatives to traditional glass mirrors. While they provide excellent reflectivity, minor visual distortions or imperfections may occur due to material properties and fabrication methods. Additionally, because light passes through the polycarbonate sacrificial layer before reaching the reflective stainless surface, a slight "double image" effect can occur. This is caused by light reflecting off both surfaces, creating a minor image offset—this is normal and expected physics of layered materials.
These mirrors are selected for environments where safety, durability, and vandal resistance are paramount—such as correctional facilities, gyms, public restrooms, schools, and transportation hubs. Customers accept potential minor reflective discrepancies and double image effects in exchange for the superior safety and impact resistance these mirrors provide. They are engineered for functionality in harsh environments—not for perfect, glass-like reflection.
High Moisture Environments
For installations in high moisture areas, it is recommended to seal the edges where the polycarbonate cover meets the stainless steel reflective surface. This prevents moisture intrusion, which can lead to condensation or mold growth between layers.
Cleaning and Maintenance Instructions
Proper cleaning and maintenance are essential to preserve the mirror’s appearance and prevent moisture intrusion between the layers:
- Use a Mild Cleaner: Clean with a non-abrasive cleaner, such as Windex, and a soft microfiber cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could scratch the polycarbonate or stainless surface.
- Dry Thoroughly: After cleaning, ensure both the polycarbonate layer and the reflective surface are completely dry before reassembly or sealing to prevent moisture buildup and potential mold growth.
Following these care guidelines will maintain the integrity, appearance, and long-term durability of your vandal-resistant mirror.
